42nd Street Cast Is Ready To Go
Written on the 3 August 2016 by scotch
A woman determined to perform on Broadway is just one similarity budding actress Tayla Coad shares with the character she plays in her high school musical.
The Year 12 student is the leading lady in Scotch College's production of 42nd Street a tale about small town girl Peggy Sawyer who moves to New York in search of stardom.
The musical is based on author and dancer Bradford Ropes' 1932 novel of the same name.
"I read the script and thought to myself, 'wow this is me'," Tayla, 18, says."The script says Peggy Sawyer is young, talented and hopeful and these are three words others say about me.
"She says what I (would) think ... it is freaky."Tayla started dancing at Adelaide's Total Image Performing Arts Studio when she was two years old. Since then, she has been involved in many productions and competitions.
"I loved dancing and as I kept on going I realised if I wanted to be a professional dancer, I had to be a singer because even ensemble performers on Broadway need to be able to sing," she says.
"Then I realised I had to act, so I learned to do all three and have been doing musicals ever since." Tayla performs alongside classmate Lachlan Williams who plays director Julian Marsh, a man staging a show called Pretty Lady during the Great Depression.
"I love that 42nd Street is a musical about a musical because it is a good concept to play around with," Lachlan, of Eden Hills, says.
The show is at Scotch College, Carruth Rd, Torrens Park, from August 4-13.
Cost: Adults $30, Concession $20. Buy tickets here.
