A force to be reckoned with

Written on the 16 September 2013 by scotch

The results from the 2013 Australian Mathematics Competition have arrived and our Scotchie students have once again shown that they are a mathematical force to be reckoned with!

The Australian Mathematics Competition is an annual event that is administered by the non-profit Australian Mathematics Trust, which has representatives on the Board of the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers, Australian Academy of Science and Australian Mathematical Society. It was introduced in Australia in 1978 and has since become the largest single Australian education event in which around forty countries throughout the Pacific and South East Asia participate.

This year, three hundred and ninety Scotchies from Years 7 to 12 completed the paper with a commendable forty-two percent of our students achieving Credit Certificates or higher within their year group for our state.

Of these students, there were forty-one impressive Distinction awards and a further two exceptional performances from Baxter Newbegin (Intermediate Division, 100 Percentile) and Henry Bennett (Upper Primary Division, 100 Percentile) who both achieved High Distinctions.

Ned Bennett, however, astonished us all achieving one of the rare 'Prize' awards that are granted to only one in three hundred students in the region and year group. This is the highest award that can be attained in this competition. Ned also won the Prudence Award for the school’s highest number of consecutive correct answers.
