Annika honours aunt's true colours

Written on the 15 August 2017 by scotch

Annika Jones's dream is for her aunt to walk down the aisle in a wedding dress she made as a school project.

The Scotch College student, 14, made a rainbow flag-inspired dress in the hope her aunt, Michelle Reidger, can marry her partner, Cara Jones, in the garment.

"My aunty is in a same-sex relationship and I wanted to create a dress reflecting marriage equality," Annika, of Black Forest, says.

"It is very topical at the moment so I thought it would be a good thing.

"When my aunty told me she wanted to wear it I was so happy I made it in her size."

Annika will enter her dress in the 2017 Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards state final at Scotch College this weekend.

The event is for the next generation of fashion designers to show off their skills for the catwalk and boost creativity.

There are four different categories casual wear, formal wear, wearable art and a society and environment category for garments reflecting a topical issue.

Annika, who hopes to be a fashion designer, hopes her dress makes a statement.

"I made a white satin dress underneath and, on the back, I made these tulle fans then put them altogether," she says.

"I have been working on it for about a year, once a week for a couple of hours.

"I really wanted to challenge myself."

Each category winner qualifies for the national final in Perth on Saturday, October 21.

The event is on this weekend at Scotch College, Carruth Rd, Torrens Park. Visit the Event Page for more details.
