Ben Francis captures Lions Public Speaking Award

Written on the 14 March 2017 by scotch

On 25 February, the Lions Club of Murray Bridge hosted its annual Youth of the Year event at the Johnstone Park clubrooms.

The students who took up the challenge were Breigh Angove and Joy Omega from Murray Bridge High School, Esther Gutteridge from Tyndale College and Ben Francis from Scotch College.

They were interviewed in the morning, by the experienced panel of judges and at the afternoon's public speaking session, the students were introduced to a small gathering of Lions members, parents and special guests Adrian Pederick MP, Mayor Brenton Lewis and zone chairman Carolyn Kilpatrick.

The contestants produced responses for each of the two impromptu questions in the given time. Their five minute prepared speeches (of their own choice) were thought provoking, inspirational and certainly provided a thorough understanding of the respective topics.

Candidates were only permitted to have the use of the microphone and their own prompt notes for reference and no other devices.

A masterly performance by Ben Francis, who spoke on the statistical side of domestic violence, earned him the Public Speaking Award.

Breigh Angove was the overall winner, advancing to the regional final.

Each year, the club looks to local secondary schools to become involved with eligible students needing to be aged between 15.5 and 19 years.
