Ben Francis Stars in Fresh Take on Classic
Written on the 20 August 2014 by scotch
BEN Francis is hoping for a fairytale start to his acting career when he plays the boy who never grows up – Peter Pan – in a new play opening this week.
Ben, 15, of Craigburn Farm, is Peter in Peter and Alice, written by John Logan and produced by Independent Theatre.
“It’s set in 1932 in a bookshop in London where Alice Liddell Hargreaves and Peter Llewelyn Davies, the real life inspiration for the characters in Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan, meet,” Ben says.
“The performance is about what they would have talked about and the play is based around that and it reflects on their childhood.”
Ben, a Year 9 student at Scotch College, has performed with the State Opera of SA, had lead roles in school musicals and returned in May from a tour with the Australian Youth Performing Arts Team.
But he says it is a dream come true getting to play the boy who never grows up.
“I think it’s awesome and it’s so great because we know we are going to grow up, so to play someone who is innocent and fearless is really fun,” he says.
“I wish I could live like that forever and not have to go to school.”
Ben was scouted by Independent Theatre’s Artistic Director Rob Croser when he was performing High School Musical for Adelaide Youth Theatre last year. Since June he has been rehearsing two to three nights a week.
Peter and Alice is at The Space, Adelaide Festival Centre, from August 21-30. More details: independenttheatre.org.au
