Ben is ready to make a splash

Written on the 20 January 2016 by scotch

Ben Francis has never made his school's swimming team, however he needs to make a splash to win the heart of a mermaid next week.

Ben, 16, will play Prince Eric in Adelaide Youth Theatre's show The Little Mermaid, based on Danish author Hans Christian Andersen's book of the same name.

The musical tells the story of Ariel, a mermaid princess who dreams of becoming a human after she sees Prince Eric from afar.

"My life has always been about performance," Ben, who attends Scotch College, says.

"I've been that musical guy who never made sports day teams, the classic theatre stereotype guy.

"Prince Eric is one of the most challenging roles I have ever done because he is very classical in the way he sings."

The cast of 120 undertook two weeks of intensive rehearsals to put the show together, which started last week. Ben has been working closely with the show's other lead actors, including Imala Konyn, of Adelaide, who plays Ariel, and Benji Riggs, of Rostrevor, who plays Sebastian.

"You all start not knowing your script and within about two weeks you are on stage, it's stressful in the line learning department," Ben says. "It's will be a great show though because ... we are using great technology so it looks like it is set underwater."

It is on at The Arts Theatre, 53 Angas St, Adelaide, from January 28-31. Cost: From $25. Details:
