Brooklyn Ready for the Ride of Her Life

Written on the 20 July 2017 by scotch

Age is no barrier for Brooklyn Vonderwall, who is gearing up for her first international cycling race.

The 16-year-old will compete in the 2017 UCI Junior Cycling Championship in Italy next month.

"Before the final squad was selected there were 20 riders and we went on a camp and then we were selected from our results," Brooklyn, of Mitcham, says.

"We did normal training sessions at the velodrome ... power testing and they (selectors) were also looking at our attitude to make sure we were good teammates."

Brooklyn was identified as having the characteristics to be a successful cyclist at a South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) talent identification program at Scotch College two years ago. She had her sights set on competitive running, but her cycling commitments took priority, forcing her to give up the sport.

Since then, she has competed in a number of state and national cycling championships and now has her eyes set firmly on competing in the Olympics.

"I'm really looking forward to the experience," Brooklyn says.

The competition is on between August 23-27.
