Doney siblings set their sights on sporting future

Written on the 10 May 2017

These Doney siblings are on track for sporting success and they are courting a fair bit of attention along the way.

Lucy and Harvey, of Scotch College, have been invited to top-level national programs for athletics and tennis respectively, the first step in what they hope will be long sporting careers.

Lucy, 14, will in October travel to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra for a training camp with 100 of the country's best junior athletes.

She caught the eye of talent scouts last month when she won the silver medal in the under-15 girls triple jump at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships (the second year in a row she has won silver). Lucy has also broken 3 state records for triple jump, including the under-14 Little Athletics triple jump, the under-14 Athletics SA triple jump, and the SSSA under-14 triple jump, with a whopping 11.99m.

"The camp is for two nights and we will have specialised coaches for our events, so hopefully I learn a lot," Lucy says.

The Year 9 student hopes to one day represent Australia on the international stage a dream shared by her 12-year-old brother.

Harvey has been accepted into Tennis Australia's National Academy, a pathway program for aspiring professional players. The Kingswood Tennis Club star is already juggling 11 training sessions a week with his club and school as he sets about emulating the feats of his sporting hero tennis star and former Scotch College student Thanasi Kokkinakis.

"It's about 14 hours a week (of training) ... but I love it," Harvey, a Year 7 student, says.

"I want to make a big career out of tennis."
