Football is Esther's passion

Written on the 4 May 2016

Growing up in a football family, Esther Boles-Frahn quickly found out that netball was not for her.

"I was always getting told off for being too rough and they were always giving me warnings," Esther says.

"I can't really come to a stop and someone said to me that I need to find a sport where you are allowed to do that."

Esther was encouraged by her family in 2013 to try out for the boys under-13 team at Central Augusta Football Club and has not looked back since.

The Scotch College student, 15, has been selected to represent South Australia in the state under 18 girls football team that is competing in the national carnival in Melbourne this week.

After playing against boys in Port Augusta for three years, Esther found herself without a place to play due to the rule restrictions for mixed football in older grades.

Faced with hanging up the boots, Esther decided to become a boarder at Scotch College. Esther says the decision to leave her family was a tough one.

"The thought of not playing footy I couldn't really do that," Esther says.

She now plays as a ruckrover for the Morphettville Park A grade women's team.

Esther is determined to follow in the footsteps of her grandfather Noel Boles, who once kicked 24 goals in a single game in the Essendon District Football League.

Her aim is to play in the expanding AFL Women's Football League.

Eight AFL-affiliated female teams are set to compete in the inaugural competition next year.

"As time gets on and I'm getting older, I feel myself getting more strong in the game and my skills are developing quickly," Esther says.

"If you can work hard, it can happen."
