Harry paints powerful anti-violence message

Written on the 28 September 2015 by scotch

Armed with a paint can, one Scotch College student hopes to put an end to violence and it starts in the boys' change room.

Harry Tomlian, 18, recently completed his first mural, spread across two walls, as part of a campaign to prevent male violence against women.

The mural depicts a dispute between a man and woman, who are surrounded by tears, and a tagline which reads 'it starts with you'. A a white ribbon call to action represents the national, male-led campaign to end the violence against women.

The 10-hour labour of love is part of Harry's Year 12 art and design studies class.

"Everyone needs to know that if you want to make a change, it starts with you," Harry, of Mitcham, says.

"I thought because it is in a boys' change room, it would be appropriate to create a mural that has a good message."

More than 60 women this year have been killed as a result of violence across Australia, a number Harry wants to see drop.

He will speak to younger students in coming weeks about domestic violence and participate in the school's awareness walk around the city in November as part of White Ribbon Day.

His art work and powerful messages have received widespread praise and he will continue painting murals "to leave his mark" around the school.

"I'm happy people are approaching me because I love art and want to keep continuing what I am doing and hope people realise the messages," he says.

"I'd love to do more murals in the future because I just love spray painting."
