High Flying Gymnastics Trio Tackling Nation's Best
Written on the 20 May 2015
Three Scotch College students will represent SA in this month's Australian Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne.
Eleni Glynatsis, Abbie Johnston and Anna Karaganova are among 1300 competitors at the event. The trio will be joined by their maths teacher, Liana Crompton, who is the SA Women's Artistic Gymnastics Head Coach.
Anna, who will compete in rhythmic gymnastics, has her eye on next year's Olympics. "I've just progressed to senior international, so there is going be a bit of tough competition," Anna, 16, says.
"I'm quite young and this is my first year in seniors and all the other girls are a lot more experienced than me but I'm just going to try my best and see where it goes."
Anna, of Hallett Cove, was crowned level 10 the second highest grade National Champion at last year's event. "It gives me some confidence and I am always very excited to represent the state," she says.
Abbie, of Lower Mitcham, will compete in rhythmic gymnastics at her eighth national event.
"I'm hoping to do my best over there," Abbie, 16, says.
"I've been practising this routine since the middle of last year I compete with four other gymnasts doing the same routine."
Eleni, 15, will represent the state for the first time. "I started gymnastics when I was seven so this is my eighth or ninth year," the Mitcham resident says.
"I want to put all the hard work I've put in at training into the competition and just do my very best."
Eleni will compete in artistic gymnastics, which includes bar, floor, beam and vault.
The championships started on Monday and runs until May 30.
