Indigo on the cutting edge of fashion

Written on the 9 September 2015

When it comes to fashion, Scotch College student Indigo Buck has the cutting edge on other emerging designers.

The 17-year-old has been using laser cutting technology and different metals to create garments as part of her Year 12 visual art studies.

Indigo, of Mylor, will unveil her latest catwalk creations this Sunday at the state final of the Apex Australia Teenage Fashion Awards. The awards showcase the work of the nation's best up and coming fashion designers.

"I've reinvented a traditional Indian garment using modern technology," Indigo says.

"I combined Indian handwork and hand embossing and used new materials such as copper.

"You can say I have a real interest in the culture and the artistic techniques they use."

Indigo's mother, Tiffany Manuell, who owns the Happy House label which makes a range of products including stationary, bed linen and clothes, has taught her daughter how to use a laser to cut fabric, to prevent fraying.

"Mum has given me basic skills like how to work with colour palettes as well as sewing skills, which has really given me my own style," Indigo says.

"I have a fair bit to do with some of her brands, too, because I help sew and cut jewellery.

"So it's given me some industry experience."

The awards will be held this Sunday 13 September at Scotch College, Carruth Road Torrens Park. More information can be found here.
