Jack and Sophia are Wicked

Written on the 12 April 2017

Watching the musical Wicked for the first time, Sophia Thompson knew she wanted to be on the stage. Fast forward five years, and the Scotch College student is starring in a local production of the play, a prequel to L. Frank Baum's classic The Wizard of Oz, next week.

"When I actually saw Wicked for the first time, I thought to myself that I wanted to do musical theatre," Sophia, 14, says. "And then when I saw Elphaba sing Defying Gravity ... it became one of my favourite shows to date."

Sophia plays Glinda the Good Witch's friend, Shenshen in the show.

The Year 9 student started performing when she was about three years old, with Theatre Bugs in Norwood. She has gone on to star in school musicals and other amateur productions.

Sophia hopes Wicked is a stepping stone to a career in the performing arts.

"I know it is a hard industry to get into, but this in my dream and I have to do my best," Sophia says.

Wicked plays at Walford School from 19-23 April. More details: facebook.com/SDPresents
