Jake and Tess hope to shine at Championships

Written on the 16 September 2016 by scotch

When Tess and Jake Bastian compete at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championship in Darwin this week, they will remember where their passion for the sport started.

The Northern Territory sun will remind the Scotch College students of their hometown, Gunnedah, in northwestern NSW.

Jake, now of Myrtle Bank, says it will bring back memories of when he began swimming competitively when he was about seven years old to beat the heat.

"We had a local pool where we went to a fair bit and that is where everything started for us," he says.

"We then joined the local club and did town meets."

Jake, 15, will swim in the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle, as well as 50m, 100m, 200m butterfly in the male 15-16 years old section.

Tess will compete in the 200m and 400m individual medley, 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly in the female 15-16 section.

Tess, 16, looks forward to the event because she will swim in an outdoor pool, like at Gunnedah.

"In the outdoors you need to take into account the wind and the outside temperatures and stuff like that," Tess says.
