A hop, step and a jump has helped send 12-year-old Lucy Doney on her way to a national athletics meet.

Lucy has qualified for next month's Australian Junior Athletics Championships after winning gold in the 100m, 200m, long jump, triple jump and hurdles at Athletics SA's state competition.

The Eastern Districts Athletics Club member says hard work has led to her success.

"I tell myself all the time to work hard," Lucy, of Colonel Light Gardens, says.

"I have to stay focused, prepare myself and concentrate on what I am doing so that means no mucking around."

It will be the fifth time Lucy, who is in Year 8 at Scotch College, has competed at a national level since starting athletics when she was three.

She hopes to follow in the footsteps of track and field star Margaret Gayen, who competed in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

"I train with her sometimes and I want to be just like her," she says.

"She is so determined and I like that.

"I'd like to compete in the Olympics one day, but probably not the next one (in Rio this year)."

The Australian Junior Athletics Championships is in Perth from March 8-13. Details:
