Onor leading young actors into the world

Written on the 23 March 2016

Sixteen SA teenagers will be the first Australians to perform at a World Festival of Children's Theatre in Canada in early June if they can raise the money.

True North, an acting troupe from the northern suburbs, will take nine miniplays to the competition, each one about a teen problem like social anxiety, bullying, peer pressure or the sexualisation of young girls.

Scotch College student Onor Nottle whose acting credits include a role in the SA-made film Touch is one of holding sausage sizzles, garage sales and a Pozible crowdfunding campaign to raise the $76,000 they need for the two-week trip.

"The great thing about True North is the kids create the shows," Onor, 14, says. "We don't do your classic Romeo and Juliet love story. We do plays that we have made up and this one is about social issues that kids today face."

Onor, a Theatre Bug since she was five, joined True worked with veteran casting director Angela Heesom and her Adelaide Youth Theatre. As a Year 9 student at Scotch College, Onor has the runaway success of ex-student Sarah Snook who visited her old school last year to follow.

Sarah starred in The Dressmaker with Kate Winslet last year and has just played opposite Ralph Fiennes at the Old Vic theatre in London.

"I absolutely loved her; she is a fantastic speaker and I am very inspired by her and the work she has done," says Onor.

"If I were to become an actor, I would aspire to be someone like her."
