Principal Oughton to return to NZ in 2015
Written on the 28 March 2014From the Chair of Council
I am writing to inform you that I have reluctantly accepted the resignation of our highly respected and valued Principal, Tim Oughton. He will leave Scotch College at the end of 2014 after eight years of inspirational leadership to take up the position of Executive Principal of Kristin School in Auckland, New Zealand. Kristin has an excellent national and international reputation and is one of the largest Independent Schools in New Zealand.
Since joining us in 2007, Tim has worked enthusiastically and successfully to grow the College’s reputation and enrolments. His influence has been beneficial to Scotch in so many ways and is clearly evident in the cohesive, flourishing and forward focussed community that will be his legacy.
I am sure the whole Scotch community will share my mixed emotions – sadness at our loss, gratitude for the extraordinary contribution Tim and his wife Heather have made to our school and happiness for them as they bring together four generations of their family in one place.
Tim has assured me that this has been the most difficult decision of his professional life. His relationship personally and professionally with the Scotch students, staff, council, and wider school community over the years has been of the highest standard. However, family ties are too great and with an expected grandchild, two of his children back in Auckland for the long term, and an ageing mother in New Zealand he feels that this is an opportunity that he cannot pass over.
Scotch, with its tradition of family ties and values, must respect his decision.Personally I feel sadness because we are losing a great school principal. Tim’s rapport with the students is very special. The strength of the school’s leadership team, the way it works together and its commitment to leading the school to a vibrant future is a tribute to his leadership prowess. Similarly, Tim and Heather’s extraordinary immersion in school activities, their care for individual students and the leadership they provide for the myriad set of events that happen during a typical year across the broader Scotch community is simply remarkable.
But my sadness is outweighed by the joy I saw in Tim and Heather’s eyes as they shared the happy news of the pending birth of their first grandchild and now as they contemplate the fusion of personal and professional aspirations that this unexpected opportunity brings with it.
I hope you share my happiness for the Oughton family. There will be many opportunities in the remainder of the year for members of our community to express their gratitude to Tim and Heather for all they have done for Scotch – they will be greatly missed and never forgotten.
For Scotch, this ending gives rise to new possibilities. The College is in a wonderfully strong position as we embark on a search for Tim’s replacement. I have no doubt we will attract a world class set of candidates for the Principal’s role and I am sure the choice that we will have to make will be a difficult one.
