Scotch College Rowing

Scotch College students Sophie Day and Charlie O'Brien say their school's rowing crews will be a force to be reckoned with at this year's Head of the River regatta.

The Year 12 rowing captains hope to lead the boys and girls First VIII teams to back-to-back victories this weekend. Sophie who will compete in the race for the last time, says winning last year was a highlight of her time as a boarder at the school.

"It was one of the best days of my life when we won ... we had so many Scotch College teams win so it was really great for the school," Sophie, 17, says.

"We are quite competitive this year, so hopefully we win it again."

Last year, Scotch College Boys First VIII beat Prince Alfred College by 3.85 seconds to claim its first title in 20 years. The girls were crowned Head of the River champions for the first time since 2001, beating Walford, the reigning champions from 2009-2014, by 4.14 seconds. The Torrens Park college was the first team to win both the boys and the girls First VIII race in the event's 94-year history.

Charlie, of McLaren Vale, says waking at 4.30am for training was difficult, but strenuous fitness and rowing sessions were important to keep the team competitive.

"Training has been pretty crazy ... but it keeps us motivated," Charlie, 17, says. "It's worth it though (because we) won last year ... everyone was going crazy and there were just tears of joy."

Scotch College has 111 students racing at West Lakes, on Saturday, March 12.
