Scotch duo ready to strike at nationals

Written on the 22 June 2016

When school friends Hattie Shand and Erin Cameron found out they had both been chosen in the SA Under-18 hockey side, they were over the moon. The Scotch College students will compete in the Australian Hockey Championships in Launceston from July 7-18.

"I was really excited to find out that we were both selected as we are able to represent the school and make them feel proud," the 16 year old says.

Erin says she was first attracted to the game in Year 5. "I really like the pace of the game, being able to go where I want, and to have the freedom to run around," she says.

Hattie, who is in year 11, says her decision to move from Naracoorte has been worthwhile.

"It is a really good opportunity (because) I feel like hockey up here is such a better standard and I have been given so many more opportunities to play," she says.

This will be the fifth time the 16 year old has represented SA in the sport.

"I am pretty excited to be able to go away and to be part of a really strong team this year," Hattie says.

"This is our strongest group we have had in a while so I hope everyone can work together and we can finish in the top four."

The pair also compete in Scotch College's open hockey team and play for Adelaide Hockey Club.

The girls will also compete in the School Sports Under-16 Championships in Melbourne from August 6-13.
