Sky's the limit for Brad Dare

Written on the 19 August 2015 by scotch

Sixteen-year-old Scotch College student Bradley Dare is among one of the youngest South Australians to be awarded his Recreational Aviation Pilot's Certificate.

The 16-year-old has been awarded a Recreational Aviation Pilot's Certificate, which allows him to fly solo within a 46km radius of Aldinga Airfield.

The teenager sat a number of exams and clocked up 65 hours of flying time - 25 hours more than he has so far done on the road learning to drive - to get the accreditation.

Brad, of Blackwood, says most people think he has a driver's licence because he can fly an aircraft.

"My instructors always assume that I will be able to get down to the airfield really easily, but it is actually quite difficult because I can't drive myself because I have to rely on mum," Brad says. "I've always found flying much easier than driving."

Before starting flying lessons at Aldinga Biplanes about three years ago, Brad applied for a scholarship to start his career with the air force cadets. He was unsuccessful, which inspired him to pursue private study.

Brad who is now in a recruitment program to become a helicopter pilot in the army says he wants to better his skills to be on par with his father, Paul, who also flies planes.

"I intend on going for a much more difficult (certificate) by the end of the year which will allow me to carry passengers around Australia," he says.

In the meantime, he will continue to catch the bus to school.
