Sport is a juggling act for Lucy

Written on the 20 June 2017

Lucy Knight is keeping a lot of balls in the air.

Lucy, 14, will be part of the state team at the Australian Under-16 Basketball Championships in July, just months after also representing SA in the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball competition.

The Scotch College student enjoys boosting her athletic skill by trying different sports, including swimming, tennis and netball.

South Australian Sports Institute (SASI) identified her as a potential volleyballer about 18 months ago following testing at her school.

"I've always enjoyed basketball, but never really had an interest in volleyball until I was accepted in the SASI program," Lucy, of Torrens Park, says. "I then thought volleyball sounds like a bit of fun and gave it a go, then tried out for the state team."

Standing at 193cm tall, it is the first time the Forrestville Eagles player has made a state basketball side. But she says after her experience at the national volleyball competition earlier this year, she is ready for the next challenge.

Lucy says the best performances come from dedicated team players.

"You need to be persistent, supportive of other people and willing to work hard to get your position," she says.

She trains at least four times a week and always plays one game of basketball. "I'm definitely busy and try to use my time efficiently so I can have fun doing everything." The Australian Under-16 Championships are at Warwick Stadium in Perth from July 8-15.
