Teen rowers return to the water

The Scotch Rowing Club from Adelaide returned to Nelson for an annual rowing camp recently after a successful 2015 season.

The six-day camp on the Glenelg River in January was completed in excellent rowing conditions with mild temperatures, calm waters and almost no rain.

Mount Gambier's Alex Spehr, 16, was one of those attending after starting at Scotch College during the last term of 2015.

"I heard it was going to be hard work and it was, however it was also very rewarding and you learn so much and get to know each other well in a very short time," he said.

Scotch boys captain of boats Charlie O'Brien said the rowers acknowledged the level of support from coaches and Scotch College.

He said all rowers were appreciative of the many parents who made the trek from Adelaide to support them in their campaign. The camp's challenging training schedule ended with the Nelson Cup, which was a fun race between combined crews, including the Scotch coaching team.

Spectators remarked the coaches may have had a slight advantage, having Toby Lister, Scotch director of rowing and Australian Men's 8 coxswain at the London Olympics, on board.

After the race, Toby said it had been the most successful camp conducted in an idyllic location and confirmed Scotch would be back next year.
