Will has stars in his eyes

Will Twizell is swimming his way to success after securing a scholarship which will help him achieve his goal of studying in America.

The former Scotch College student, 18, was awarded the school's 2015 Athletes Dream scholarship, which will prepare him for college life later this year.

Twizell, who competes mostly in 100m and 200m breaststroke, was shocked to receive the award.

"I didn't realise I would get it... there are quite a few swimmers at school," Twizell, of Eden Hills, says. "This has always been a dream and one I didn't think was possible to achieve.

"The reason I want to go (to college) is because I think students have such an amazing ability to juggle their schooling as well as their sporting career."

Twizell was awarded the $5000 scholarship through Athletes Dream an organisation which helps students find college placements. The company's chief executive Ash Smith, a Scotch College old scholar, provides the funds to give back to the school.

Twizell had to prove he had competitive swimming times, a strong academic record and pass a SAT US college admission exam to prove he was ready for college-level study.

The Norwood Swimming Club athlete hopes to move to the US by July and enrol at a school preferably in Florida. He wants to study either health science, human movement, kinesiology, medical science or physiotherapy. In the meantime, he is putting his energy into improving his national ranking and training for the 2016 Australian Swimming Championships in April, which double as the Olympic trials.

"I'm going to have an open mind about everything and just look at where all these experiences take me," he says. "The journey has been so good so far and I have learnt so much."
