Purposes
At Scotch College homework is set for a number of reasons:

  • committing new learning to memory
  • checking understanding of new concepts
  • meeting deadlines for assignments
  • keeping up with the class program
  • developing sound study habits and time management practices

Middle School and Senior College
Guidelines
1. Students in younger year levels will be set smaller amounts of work. The following daily maximum amounts of time for homework at each year level act as a guide:

Year 7   45 minutes click for schedule
Year 8 60 minutes click for schedule
Year 9 75 minutes click for schedule
Year 10 90 minutes
Year 11 150 minutes
Year 12 210 minutes

2. To help with time management, a homework schedule has been set up for students from Year 7-10.
3. Home Group teachers may vary the subjects set so as to cater for different learning needs.
4. Assignments may be set over a period of time, e.g. a week or two week cycle.
5. Diaries are to be used for students in Year 7-10 to record specific details of all set work. The ical software can also be used a planner and to record work.
4. Parents are encouraged to discuss the work with their child.
5. Research indicates that students should complete their homework in a well-lit room, sitting at a desk. Music with lyrics and TV and computer games are distractors and hinder concentration and the development of long-term memory. Setting good study habits is vital.
6. It is important to also plan to do some physical activity each afternoon/evening and also to spend some time with family or boarding housemates. Physical activity can also include household chores.
