Sport at Scotch

Home/ Current Parents & Students / Sport at Scotch

Sport at Scotch is intended to be an educational experience. The aim is for all students to view sporting activities positively and to engage in valuable learning opportunities. The College believes our sporting program will be competitive if we assist students to ‘reach their personal best’.

Objectives for Sport:
Ensure that all students:

  • Feel they belong
  • Are improving in their fitness, skills and knowledge about themselves and sport
  • Are challenged regardless of skill level and ambition
  • Ensure that each student has fun in physical activity
  • Ensure that all students learn and demonstrate sportsmanship, teamwork and respect for rivals at the highest standard possible
  • Ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in a school team
  • Ensure that sport contributes positively to the social and academic development of our students

Compulsory Sport Policy
Sport is a compulsory summer and winter activity for all students in Years 7-10. Students in Years 11 and 12 are encouraged to participate. Exemptions from compulsory sport are only available where students are engaged in regular, organised sports training and competition in a sport that the College does not offer. A commitment to school sport is expected before club sport, but state, national or professional sport commitments takes precedence. When seeking an exemption it must be in writing to the applicable Head of Sport and may be granted after the Head of House and Head of School have been consulted. Parents seeking permission for a student to be excused from a competition or match must apply in writing to the supervisor of that sport (not the coach) three days prior to the match. Students who participate in the College Dance program may be granted an exemption from sport if the time commitment is comparable.

Team Nomination Policy
The online ‘Sports Choice Form’ is to be completed by the due date. The College will nominate teams based on the number of students choosing a particular sport. We ask that parents and students consider their sports choice carefully as changes present us with a range of difficulties.

Team Selection Policy
Selection of teams at Scotch College is the responsibility of the coach of each team or squad. Coaches may consult with the Heads of Sport, Sports Supervisors and team captains when making selection decisions. The Scotch College Sports Program works on the understanding that everyone who wants to participate in a sport should be given the opportunity. While this understanding is maintained, the program also aims to select the best performing individuals into the “A” or “1st” teams and then the next best performing individuals into the “B” or “2nd” teams and so on.

Coaches will consider the following when making selection decisions:

  • All students who nominate for a sport should be given equal opportunity for selection in the team
  • Reserves are an important part of the team and they will be given some “playing time” when possible, even if this weakens the overall performance of the team
  • Where there are too many nominations for a sport the College will endeavour to recruit additional students to enter an additional team or will put the students on a rotation that is equitable

Communication of Selection
Notification of team selections will be direct from the coach to the squad. At the beginning of each season students will receive team and sport information such as uniform requirements, practice times, and contact numbers for coaching staff. All team selections will be posted weekly to the Sports Noticeboard. Students are also issued instructions for away venues, including map references. Parents should not bring selection disputes directly to the coach. Disputes involving team selection should be directed to the relevant Head of Sport.

What We Expect Of Students:
Commitment
Sport is compulsory for all students in Years 7 to 10. Once any student (Years 7 to 12) has made a commitment to a sport, they must complete the season – training and games. Attendance at practices and matches is compulsory. Students must inform coaches or the coordinator of their sport personally if they cannot attend practices. Parents seeking permission for a student to be excused from a competition must apply in writing prior to the match. Students must be punctual for practices and matches.
Sportsmanship
Unsporting behaviour is not acceptable. This includes verbal or physical abuse of teammates, opponents or umpires/referees. Umpire’s/referee’s decisions are to be accepted promptly and without question. Students are to respect the decisions of their coaches. Students are encouraged to discuss any issues with the relevant Head of Sport. Students are expected to be ready to thank the opponents, the umpires/referees and coaches at the end of a game.
Dress and Equipment
Correct uniform must be worn at practices, matches and to and from competition venues. We expect students to wear the uniform correctly and take pride in it. All sports equipment must be treated with respect. Equipment should be clean and maintained.

What We Expect Of Parents:
Commitment
Your support and promotion of the importance of fulfilling a commitment. Emphasise to your child the importance of correct dress, punctuality, and care of equipment.
Sportsmanship
Focus upon your child’s efforts and performance rather than the overall outcome of the event and to applaud good play by all teams. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from all sporting activities. If you disagree with an official or coach, raise the issue through the relevant Head of Sport at school rather than question the official’s judgment in public. Condemn the use of violence in any form, be it by spectators, coaches, officials or players.
General
Never ridicule your son/daughter for making a mistake. Show appreciation to the coach of your son or daughter. Respect the “competitive space”. Never enter the field of play during competition. Parental involvement is always welcome. Roles that parents can fill include coach, umpire, scorer, trainer/medical officer, runner and many more!

What We Expect Of Captains:
Sport Captains are an important link between the students, coaches, Sports Supervisors and Heads of Sport. Captains are usually appointed at the beginning of each season. They are selected for their maturity, leadership qualities and responsible attitude. They must be capable of setting the right example at training, in competition and at school. Being the “best player” is not the defining factor. The process used to select captains will vary from sport to sport and may vary from team to team.

Captains have a number of important responsibilities that may include:

  • Communication – between all parties.
  • Setting the standard of attitude, effort, commitment, organisation and uniform.
  • Assisting to maintain rules and the uniform standard of all team members.
  • Informing the Heads of Sport of any equipment damage or repair work to facilities that may be required
  • Assisting with training, sporting functions and competitions as required. Captains should be the first to volunteer to help set up and pack up, while also encouraging other team members to also help
  • Captains may have public speaking duties in assembly or at other functions.
  • Captains may be invited to have meetings with the Heads of Sport whilst also participating in the College Student Leadership Program.
  • Captains may help develop the sporting culture at Scotch by being an assistant coach for younger students or teams.

What We Expect Of Coaches:
Scotch College Sporting Coaches are expected to:

Understand and work within the overall philosophy of Scotch College.
Communicate effectively with staff, students and parents of the College.
Teach the skills and tactics of the particular sport that they are coaching.
Teach and reinforce sportsmanship and appropriate team behaviour.
Be organised and organise the students within their care.
Create and maintain a safe environment in which to work, learn and enjoy sport together.
