For the 3 day expedition, students select from one of the following options. Depending on numbers, not all options may occur.
1. Mountain Bike Cross Country Trip This expedition will be based on the Mawson trail (Mountain Bike Trail) in Mt. Crawford Forest, the back of the Barossa Valley and sections of Mt. Crawford Forest. The trip will not require students to carry gear as it will be carried in a support vehicle. Students will need their own bike and present their bikes at school for inspection prior to the trip. It is possible to hire a bike for this expedition. A vehicle will meet the students at check points along the way should assistance be required.
2. Rock Climbing Introduction The aim of this expedition is to introduce students to the exciting sport of rock climbing. This instruction will include all the important safety issues related to climbing. The first session will be at the Scotch or Vertical Reality climbing walls. In the afternoon students will inspect where they will be climbing in the Morialta Conservation Park. Students will then travel to the Norton Summit Youth Hostel late in the afternoon. This will be our base. The evening will be spent looking at the important knots, safety and climbing techniques required. The next two days will be rock climbing and abseiling at Morialta.
3. Sailing/Kayaking Expedition – Clayton Bay The sailing expedition will be based at Clayton Bay on the lower Murray. Sailing will be on pacer dinghies. All kayaking will be in the Scotch touring kayak fleet in and around Clayton Bay. The students will receive both theory and practical sessions over the three days with some racing on the last day. A power boat will be on the water with the students when they are sailing. If the weather is poor there are a range of viable alternative activities the students can be involved in around the local area. These will be advised prior to the camp.
4. Kayak Expedition - Ral Ral Creek near Renmark This trip will use the magnificent Ral Ral Creek as a venue. After setting up camp, the afternoon will be spent working on basic skills and the safety aspects of the expedition. The next day requires the students to paddle downstream for a day. The final morning will be left as flexible as possible, more paddling or visits to some of the important environmental sites. This is a fantastic section of the river with beautiful campsites and many side trips are possible.
5. Surfing - South Coast The surfing will be instructed by staff from Surf Culture. This camp is an extension of the Year 8 training days from Week 4, Term 1. Scotch staff will assist with supervision and be in charge of the group outside all instruction time. The group will receive four sessions of instruction over the 3 days. All students will camp at the Pt. Elliot Park. The surfing is aimed at beginners. Before selecting this option please consider the cool water temperature of the south coast and air temperature of mid May. Wet suits will be provided for all students on this expedition.
