OutdoorFor the 5 day expedition, students select from one of the following options.

1. Mountain Bike Riding Expedition
This expedition is split into two sections. The first section is cycling in Wirrabara Forest then the group follows sections of the Mawson mountain bike trail along the eastern edge of the Mt. Lofty Ranges for 2 days. The route follows a variety of terrain with gentle undulations through mixed farming land. The track follows surveyed Council roads, minor dirt roads and 4WD tracks through a variety of scenery. The views from the top of ridges throughout this section of the trail over the surrounding district are memorable.

Campsites are in a variety of locations near the trail. Vehicles will accompany this trip so if the need arises we will be able to assist students who are having difficulties or equipment failure. The College will hire a bike for any student who selects this trip and does not own a suitable mountain bike. This is a cross country trip and students may need to do some training prior to this expedition.

2. Flinders Ranges Day Walking Expeditions
This expedition will provide students with access to some of the most spectacular scenery in the Flinders Ranges. Students will walk in a variety of locations, which may have the group out all day and will require physical exertion. Sites visited will include the spectacular Alligator and Warren Gorges and possibly Wilpena Pound. The campsites Scotch will use will be in a variety of locations including Warren Gorge, Arkaba Station and Spring Creek. Weather statistics would indicate this trip is the least likely to encounter rain. Facilities on this trip are minimal to non-existent.

3. The Climbing Expeditions - Mt Arapiles, Victoria
This expedition offers students extension to rock climbing experience gained at Morialta or Vertical Reality. This expedition is best suited to students who enjoy climbing and are not nervous about heights. The group will top rope on a variety of cliffs around Arapiles and all participants will multi-pitch climb twice during the trip. Only stronger climbers will be selected for this expedition. The groups will camp in campgrounds where there are minimal but adequate facilities. Students must prepare for extremes in temperature and weather, both day and night. Students need to be prepared for physical exertion on this trip. Three days climbing and the walks associated will place heavy physical demands on all participants.

4. Grampians Walking and Climbing Expedition
This Grampians trip will involve a day top rope climbing and two day walks. The group (10 students per group) will camp in tents for four nights in the northern half of the Grampians; about five and a half hours drive from Adelaide and just south of Horsham. The group is likely to spend two nights in one campsite and two nights in another. Facilities at campsites will be minimal or non-existent. The day walks that Scotch will undertake are likely to be quite rugged as there is not a lot of flat ground in the Grampians. The views are exceptional and the landscape interesting and rewarding. The aim of this particular expedition is not to cover as many kilometres as possible, but to appreciate this unique natural environment. The Summerday Valley will be the location for the climbing day. Climbing will require moderate ability and a can do attitude. The style of climbing will be top roping, the same as our training days.

This expedition requires student to have well broken in boots or shoes with good tread (no sneakers or work boots) as well as lots of warm clothing. The Grampians can be wet and very cold, so a fully waterproof, knee length, seam sealed jacket with integrated hood is essential. Waterproof over pants are highly recommended.

5. Naracoorte Caves and Grampians Walks
This is a brand new offering for Year 9 students. The Naracoorte Caves are in the southeast of South Australia, 3 hours from Adelaide. Students will travel to Naracoorte on the first two days at camp at the Caves Conservation Park Camp ground. On the first afternoon the group will undertake a morning tour of the “tourist caves” and then a longer more adventurous tour off the tourist track in the following morning. Old clothes will be required for the caves as the afternoon tour requires crawling and squeezing though narrow openings. It will be a real adventure! On Tuesday afternoon the group will travel to the northern Grampians and climb Mt Zero and then the spectacular Mt Stayplton on Thursday. This group will spend two nights in the Stayplton Campground in the northern Grampians.

6. Lightweight Bushwalking Expedition - Southern Flinders Rangers
This lightweight bushwalking expedition is based in the Mt. Remarkable National Park and surrounding pastoral land 4 hours north of Adelaide. Students will walk to campsites carrying all required equipment but will also do day walks from their bush camps. Sites visited will include Spring Creek, Cannon Swamp, Goat Rock and Mt.Remarkable all legendary locations in the folklaw in Outdoor Education. All these areas have fantastic scenery only accessible to those who camp nearby. This expedition has bush camping with no facilities until the last night. The rewards of this trip will be great as it is more of a wilderness experience and the group is unlikely to encounter other people.
