Junior School students among best in state Our Junior School students were among the best in the state when they sat for the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) - English, Writing, Spelling, Mathematics and Science. Students excelled in Maths and Writing with 28% in the top 10% of the state, while in Science they performed well with 20% in the top 10%. English is alive and well at Scotch with 43% of students in the top 11% of the state.
In addition, Charlotte Blacketer (Year 6) was awarded a gold medal in this ICAS - English for the top mark in her year level. Charlotte received the gold medal for English two years ago when she was in Year 3. At Scotch accelerated studies allow students, like Charlotte, to develop literacies at their own level through individual programming and small class sizes.
Overall in the ICAS three students achieved distinction across 4 subjects or more - these students were Charlotte Blacketer (Year 6), Darcie Kinnaird (Year 7) and Alexander Lloyd (Year 7).
In the Australian Mathematics Competition the Junior School students shined with 1 Prize-winner, 9 Distinctions and 4 Credits. Darcie Kinnaird (Year 7) was the Prize-winner achieving a result in the top one percent of students in Year 6 and was presented her award at the University of Adelaide.
Academic Highlights Scotch students excelled in the 2006 Australian Mathematics Competition. Overall, we received a Prize Winner, 7 High Distinctions, 44 Distinctions and 102 Credit certificates from Year 7 - 12. Tom Burgess (Year 9) was the Prize-winner achieving a result in the top one percent of students in Year 8.
Stephen Bacchi (Year 9) received a prize in the South Australian Maths Talent Quest.
Emily Hart (Year 8) received the Maths Olympiad Trophy.
Robotics stars head to the National's Robotics is a fun and interactive subject run in the Junior School for students in Year 4 to 6. Students participate in a series of lessons combining maths, electronics, Information Technology and design to create their own robot. The culmination of these lessons is students can participate in the State Robocup Junior Competition.
The Scotch team, of Caillin Rowe (Year 6), Emily Hammond (Year 6), Claude Davey (Year 6) and Lexie Lynch (Year 6) aka 'The Panthers' won the Dance event with a cleverly choreographed a dance routine with their four robots dancing in synchronisation to the music of The Pink Panther.
The team was invited to compete in the National Robocup Junior Competition, against teams from around Australia and Asia. At the National's the team reached the final six in the Junior section - a commendable result for their first experience of Robocup.
