Junior SchoolThe Scotch College Junior School aims to provide a diverse, inclusive curriculum to meet the individual, social and physical needs of its students. Students are provided with equal opportunities in all curriculum areas.

At Scotch College, learners develop knowledge and skills to allow them to become active citizens in their community within an ever-changing global society. A positive environment is created which allows learners to develop the confidence to reflect critically on their experiences, build new understandings and adapt to change. Students are encouraged to investigate, question and take risks with their learning, and to share discoveries using a variety of communication techniques.

Core Subjects
English: Students develop the knowledge, skills and understandings about English and Literacy which are essential for active and effective participation in their learning and global societies.

Maths: Students develop a positive attitude to Mathematics and are able to view their world mathematically. A constructivist approach is used and students are provided with opportunities to demonstrate and further develop their individual skills, knowledge and understanding of their Mathematics curriculum whilst solving problems.

Junior SchoolHealth: Students plan, act and reflect so that they develop knowledge and understandings, attitudes, values and skills, which in turn promote healthy life and practices.

Science: Students develop ability and aptitude to inquire about nature through observations and experimentation. Their understanding of the natural world is encouraged and they are better equipped to make informed decisions about their personal lives and how environments are sustained.

Society and Environment: Students are challenged to make informed responses both as individuals and with others, to significant issues. In Society and Environment students gain knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that lead to active participation in local and global society.

Design and Technology: Students critique, design and make products, processes and systems. They learn knowledge, skills, strategies and dispositions to develop their identities as individuals so that they may then design shared, sustainable futures.

Junior SchoolVisual Arts: Through active involvement in Art, students develop creative and powerful ways of expressing themselves, encouraging exploration, experimentation, investigation and invention. All students from Reception to Year 6 are taught by our specialist Art teacher, as well as having Art lessons taught by their Homegroup teacher.

Music: Students develop knowledge, skills and understandings about music that are essential for active and effective participation in learning. All students from Reception to Year 6 have a Music lesson every week taught by our specialist Music teacher, as well as involvement in the various choirs. Many opportunities exist for students to also be involved in Band, Orchestra and a variety of different musical ensembles. Many students also take advantage of the large and varied group of instrumental teachers that provide individual, or small group tuition, to students at the Junior School throughout the school day.

Language Other Than English (French): Students develop an appreciation of cultures other than their own, while acquiring knowledge and skills that will enable them to communicate in another language. French is taught by a specialist French teacher.

Physical Education: Students individually, or in groups, enhance their self-awareness by developing, refining and expanding their movement abilities and strategies within an appropriate context of physical activities. All students have two Physical Education lessons every week with one of the two specialist PE teachers in the Junior School. All students from Years 3-6 are also involved in our Sport program, (Years 3 and 4 - Intraschool, and Years 5 and 6 - Interschool), and many opportunities exist for students in this curriculum area.

Information and Communication Technology: Students from Reception to Year 6 have opportunities to develop ICT capability through activities that arise in all curriculum areas, undertaken individually or in groups. A specialist ICT teacher supports Homegroup teachers with the teaching and integration of ICT through the curriculum.
