Year 10 Curriculum
In Year 10, all students will study the following core subjects:

and SIX additional elective semesters from the following: A/B indicates a two unit sequence where the study of semester A is a prerequisite for semester B

*These courses are only chosen after consultation with parents, Head of House and the Head of Curriculum.
In some instances students may not be able to take a particular combination of subjects, as it is impossible to offer every combination. The timetable, grouping of subjects and class sizes are determined by students demand and it may be necessary to ask some students to modify their subject combination.
In addition all students participate in the Outdoor Education and Career Education programs.

At Stage 1 the minimum pattern of study is 12 (semester length) units chosen according to the following curriculum pattern. All students will study the following Learning Areas:

Note: Students can only choose a maximum of three semester units of Art, Design & Photography
* Denotes subjects which have special requirements and must be negotiated with the Head of Curriculum. # Dance occurs after school hours as part of SPACE (Scotch Performing Arts Co-curricular Enrichment).. A/B - indicates subjects offered as 2 unit sequences. Students must study unit A as a prerequisite for unit B. S1/S2 - indicates subjects that can be studied as either a two unit sequence or as a one unit study. S1 or S2 - indicates course content is repeated and so the unit can be selected in one semester only.

In selecting your units, it is important to read the Curriculum Guide booklet to make sure that prerequisites are met. If students are considering studying a Year 12 subject then they must make an appointment with the Head of Curriculum. Consideration must also be given to future Stage 2 (Year 12) units, tertiary entrance, and particular areas of employment.

The following conditions apply for SACE completion:

Six Stage 2 units must be studied ( i.e. 3 full year subjects)

at least one subject from Group 1 ( Arts/Humanities/Cultural Studies)
-
at least one from Group 2 ( Maths/Science/Technology) and one other from any group.
The following conditions apply for University Entrance (achieving a TER score)

At least 10 units from Stage 2 must be studied (i.e. 5 full year subjects)

Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS) eligibility rules apply.

Certain university courses may also require specific Stage 2 prerequisite subjects at Year 12.

Interstate Universities often have different prerequisites requirements. English Studies is a particular additional requirement for many interstate courses and institutions.
NOTE: Subjects shown by name only in the following groups are HESS General for university entrance. Subjects which have HESS Restricted entry status are shown by the symbol (R).

# Classes/Performances groups occur after school hours as part of the Academy at Scotch * Subjects which have special requirements and must be negotiated with the Head of Curriculum. Indonesian and French will be offered at the South Australian School of Languages.
Scotch offers both HESS General and HESS Restricted subjects. Please read Section C of this course book entitled "SACE and TERTIARY ENTRANCE" for an explanation of the implications of choices of particular combinations of subjects at Year 12 Level for University entrance.
