The Year 7 program is the springboard for students in Outdoor Education at Scotch. Training days which focus on aquatic and camping skills are designed to prepare students for a three day (two night) expedition; one night at "Roonka" (or on Goat Island) near Blanchetown and one night at Earth Sanctuaries, Yookamurra Sanctuary. Camp activities concentrate on the appreciation of the sustainability of the natural environment, with environmental studies on land kayaking the billabong and reaches of the river.
The Outdoor Education program becomes increasingly exciting and diverse as the students progress through the middle years.
This program aims to develop:-
• an understanding and appreciation what is required to sustain the natural environment, the need for its conservation and preservation and stewardship of the land.
• outdoor living skills so that students can successfully undertake a 3 day camp with minimum impact upon the natural environment.
• personal resilience, a sense of responsibility towards others, co-operation and an awareness of the benefits of group cooperation and unity.
On the first night students camp on "Goat Island", a small island in the middle of the river. Access is by canoe only, and part of the fun is trying to coordinate a whole group of students to efficiently paddle their canoe. Being away from all facilities, students set up a 'bush camp' and cook on small stoves. Other activities include Canadian canoeing, solos, environmental education and an assortment of other camp activities. Students supply their own tents and food for the island.
From here the students are taught some important kayaking skills, and experience kayaking along the river and through nearby wetlands. There are also team-building activities and challenges, such as the raft-building competition. The students are given certain materials from which they must construct a raft, and then paddle it on the river.
During the afternoon of the middle day they journey to Yookamurra Sanctuary. Here the students will stay in dormitory accommodation and be involved in a variety of Environmental Education activities.
