Scotch Leads the World at 3rd International Solar Cities Schools Competition

 6 February 2008

Year 9 students from Scotch College have taken out the Motion Picture Prize in the 3rd International Solar Cities Congress, competing against schools and colleges from around the globe.

A certificate and book will be awarded to the group of Year 9 students at a formal ceremony on Tuesday 19 February at 9am in front of representatives from 90 countries around the world attending the 3rd International Solar Cities Congress in Adelaide.

The students, guided by film teacher, Richard Blinco and ecoTV’s producer Deb Lavis, developed a series of short films looking at different ways people can work towards ecologically sustainable cities.

As well as a certificate and book, the school will receive a Master Class on film making prepared and presented by internationally renowned film maker Mario Andreacchio.

Students’ works will be on display during the congress so delegates from around the world can see what students from Scotch can really achieve.

Minister for Education Jane Lomax Smith congratulated Scotch for the creative and thorough approach evident in our submission.

“I am very proud of what our Year 9s have achieved, as the students themselves should also be,” said Principal Tim Oughton.

“The win is a great example of the students we nurture here at Scotch, and demonstrates another of the ways our students are extended,” he said.

The winning submission encompassed more than film making, the students were required to research, write, interview and edit their own material as well as finding initial topics for the films.

Entries were submitted from around the world and were of a very high standard. Scotch’s submission was part of a small select group to achieve final prizes.
