2018 End of Year Update

2018 End of Year Update

It was a privilege to welcome the Governor of South Australia to be our Speech Night Guest Speaker.

I have always found His Excellency to be an extraordinary representative of how to change oneself in order to change the world.

His message was powerful and meaningful for our students, and I am delighted that our Year 12’s were able to leave our College with such strong words in their minds.

The year has been as ever busy and I am grateful to all the work done by our parents and volunteers in supporting us.  Our College is the deepest of communities, and the support we receive from you makes such a difference.

I have never known a school where the parents, Old Collegians and volunteers feel such a profound responsibility towards each other.  It is a privilege to be part of this extraordinary institution.

We are looking forward to 2018 - this is a year of final preparations before the centenary in 2019.

You should expect many communications coming from us about what that will mean for you as parents and for your children.  We have put two years of work into the arrangements for 2019 and beyond and we look forward very much to presenting those ideas to you.

To that end, please click here to view a video which updates the Scotch community on the progress we have made regarding the Live Well Program.

We consulted staff, students, parents and partners about this program on 16 September and this video provides an update with fuller details to follow in 2018.

I wish you all very well for the summer holiday.  I trust your children have safe and restful times and that they come back in 2018 ready to move forward once more in this wonderful school.

Year 12 Results 2017

A summary of the academic results for the Class of 2017 is also available.  Congratulations to our Year 12 students who performed very well.  Please click here to view details of the Year 12 results for 2017.

Disciplinary matters

As we approach the end of the school year, it is timely to remind our community about our stance on the matter of substance abuse.

Such occurrences are rare, but when they arise we have three main concerns: the wellbeing of the individual, the protection of our students from malign influence and the reputation of the College as a safe environment.

Our Health programs and guest speaker workshops actively educate and warn students about the dangers of any kind of substance abuse. However, it is critical that students do not just hear but actively listen and take responsible action.

Scotch College takes a strong stance on drugs and the consumption of substances illegally.  Depending on the nature of the drug and the amount involved, the school reserves the right to terminate an enrolment of any student who consumes an illegal substance, although we strive wherever possible to take an educational approach. The College will take the strongest action, including termination of enrolment and contact with SAPOL, against any who choose to supply drugs to others in our community.

Please note that we have no remit to deal with serious misbehaviours that occur outside of school. However, if in some way an incident is attached to a school event or there is ripple effect into the school yard we are obliged to take action due to the principles stated above. Every student at Scotch has the right to feel safe, supported and able to be their best. Peer influence and experimentation are part of being a teenager but making unwise choices that can do damage to a young person’s life, and that is not acceptable.

The summer break is a time when many teens find themselves at a loose end. I urge you as parents to discuss with your teen what will be your standard and expectation for their behaviour. Supervision boundaries obviously change as our children get older but good parenting habits need not, including ensuring plans are in place and that other parents are on the same page as you about what is and isn’t acceptable. Most issues happen when plans change and usual check-ins lapse.

Please note that we shall be reminding all our students about our expectations standards in this area at the start of the new academic year.

Save the Date

Please note that all Torrens Park parents are invited to attend the House Welcome for Parents on Friday 9 February 2018, from 6pm - 8pm.  We look forward to seeing you all at this function and further communication will be sent early next year.

Mitcham Campus and Torrens Park Campus parents are also invited to attend our Welcome Back Morning Tea on both campuses on 31 January 2018 (first day of classes) at 8:30am - 9:30am.

Leaving Staff Members

My best wishes are extended to all staff leaving the College.  I would like to make special mention of our long serving staff members, Richard Bell, Kerry Coggins, David Jones and Richard Blinco.

We thank them all for their loyal and dedicated service and wish them well for their future.

We also wish Simon McKenzie all the best in his new role in 2018 and thank him for his outstanding contribution, particularly over the last two years.
