Academic Matters: Week 1

Academic Matters: Week 1

Parent Teacher Nights

This term there will be four nights where you will be able to discuss the progress of students. We will be conducting this via telephone like we did in Term 1 as we discovered that this was a really good way to communicate – making it easier for parents to just be at home or be in various places all round the state. Don’t forget we have continuous reporting where assessment tasks are given individual feedback, but the opportunity to speak to teachers strengthens our relationships and feedback culture.

The four nights are as follows:

  • 3 August – Year 12 only (non-examinable subjects)
  • 17 and 19 August– Year 7 – 11
  • 9 September – Year 12 (examinable subjects). This is held after the trial exams

Please note: Research Project teachers will be available on 17 and 19 August.

The two nights for Year 12 provide more information around projects, folios and investigation work, ensuring that deadlines are met and providing advice around key final assessments.

Current SACE information

Earlier this year the SACE Board and SATAC answered a range of questions from students about the impact of COVID-19. As we begin Term 3, the following information has been shared via the You Can Ask That! video, where they revisit earlier questions asked and provide updates on ATAR, end-of year- exams, special provisions and VET. The video can be found here.

University Open Days

Universities are offering students virtual experiences of their campuses and courses over the following few weeks. Each University is offering the experience in a different way.

  • Adelaide University will be 16 August from 9am until 4pm. Please click here for more information
  • Flinders University are offering Virtual Open Days from 10 August – 14 August. Please click here for more information
  • UniSA are offering both Virtual Open Days 9 and 10 August and also Step on Campus 16 – 26 August. Please click here for more information
  • Torrens University – Virtual Open Day 11 August. Please click here for more information
  • TAFE Courses – information for 2021 courses can be found here
  • CQU – Adelaide Campus. Virtual Campus tour on 1 August. Please click here for more information
  • Tabor College Virtual Open Night 30 July 7pm – 8.30pm. Please click here for more information
  • SAIBT – information for courses 2021 can be found here

These sessions will provide excellent information for students in Year 10, 11 regarding upcoming decisions around subject choices and for Year 12 around finalising SATAC preferences.

University and SATAC Presentations for Year 12 students

UniSA conducted a presentation for students on Wednesday at lunchtime and it was good to see a group of students attend this session.

Representatives from Flinders and Adelaide will be at Scotch over the next two weeks. These are personalized sessions where specific questions can be answered about courses and you get a direct link with the presenter into the University.

  • Wednesday 29 July – Week 2 at lunchtime - Flinders University will present in the Lecture Theatre.
  • Tuesday 4 August – Week 3 at lunchtime - The University of Adelaide will present in the Lecture Theatre.

Wednesday 5 & Thursday 6 August – Week 3 at lunchtime will be a chance for all students to start the SATAC University application process. These sessions will be in G10/11. SATAC applications open on 3 August. See the key dates here. During this time our Careers Counsellors, Belinda Sorensen and Mark Kelly will provide information about the interstate university application process as well as assistance the application process.

Subject Choices 2021

Last term information was provided to students in Year 10 and 11 about subjects, SACE and post- secondary pathways. A future planning evening (using a webinar) was held for parents of current Year 10 students, a reminder that the link can be found here.

Upcoming Parent Information sessions (using zoom) – information has already been sent about these two sessions and how to register

  • Tuesday 28 July for current Year 9 students at 6.45pm until 7.45pm.
  • Thursday 30 July for current Year 11 students at 6.15pm until 6.45pm

The sessions will be recorded and uploaded to the school website.

Subject Information

Subject talks for students in Year 7, 8 and 9 will be held over the next two weeks.

  • Year 8 2021 – the major difference for students is that they will need to make a language choice – either Chinese or French for the whole year. Students who are currently studying CCS, our Learning Strategies Coordinator Morgan Collett will be in contact with you.
  • Year 9 2021 – Students have the opportunity to choose 4 elective subjects. Languages are now not compulsory but once a student opts of language then they cannot return. I know that this early to be thinking about this but universities in SA offer bonus points for languages when they finish Year 12.
  • Year 10 2021 – parent and student information will be provided next week around the SACE and the journey through the Senior School.

All students (Year 7 – 11) next week will receive an email where they will be able to select subject choices for 2021. Students will need to put your email into the system (via web preferences), so that you can sign off on what they have done. The submit button is at the top of the screen and you will need to ensure that this has been pressed.

Subject choices are due on Thursday 13 August.

For students in Year 10, 11 and 12 in 2020, please find a copy of the SATAC Tertiary Entrance 2021, 2022, 2023 here.

It has been really good to have many students (and parents) contacting me about their choices and decisions for 2021 and beyond. Belinda Sorensen bsorensen@scotch.sa.edu.au and Mark Kelly mkelly@scotch.sa.edu.au are also available to help students. If you have any questions about the process or need help, then please contact us.
