Academic Matters: Week 1

Academic Matters: Week 1

Last year NAPLAN was cancelled due to COVID and this year NAPLAN testing online begins on 11-13 May. In 2019 we trialled the process and in March participated in the national trial. Our systems and processes coped with the increased demand on our school network, and the students adapted to the process extremely well. The online testing allows for ‘tailored testing’ which gives students questions that are more suited to their ability – resulting in better assessment and more precise results.

NAPLAN is the measure through which governments, education authorities, schools, teachers and parents can determine whether or not students have the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community. The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. They also provide schools, states and territories with information about how education programs are working, and which areas need to be prioritised for improvement. NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process, and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by our teachers about each student’s performance.

The order of the tests is very important for the ‘tailoring’ and must be done in the following way – Reading, Writing, Conventions of Language and Numeracy. The testing schedule is below, if possible, please do not schedule any appointments during these times. If you cannot schedule another time, then let us know. Students who are sick there will be an opportunity to do the tests on Friday May 14 please contact Debra Murray dmurray@scotch.sa.edu.au

On Torrens Park Campus students will be undertaking all of the tests in the Chapel. The following is the schedule for Year 7 and Year 9.

University Entrance

Last year Adelaide University and Flinders University provided opportunities for students to have an additional entry option based on Year 11 results. Adelaide University information can be found here  and when the information for Flinders is made available, we will let the students know.

Flinders University does have other admission pathways and you can find them here. More and more universities are now looking at direct applications – ANU is one institution and please see here for more information. Students are able to apply to ANU undergraduate programs based on their Year 11 results from now until 24 May, with offers made in August.

Preparing for Semester 2 2021

I have had many students contact me about changing their subject choices for next semester. Next week students will be reminded about their choices for next semester, I can’t guarantee that we will be able to accommodate all students’ changes as our timetable grid was based on choices made by students in 2020.
