Academic Matters: Week 5

Over the last few days all of students are either getting ready for exams, finishing off assessments, or looking forward to starting a new year level.
The Year 10s have had their first taste of examinations in the Chapel with Mathematics, Science and English exams. They then go to Goose, work experience and service learning experiences. Students will receive feedback on their exam performance via seqta. If they need to make changes to their subject choices for 2020 students should come in and see either myself or Mark Horley.
Year 11 will commence exams on Monday November 25 and finish on Thursday 28 November. The majority of the exams will be held in the Year 12 common room, and students are expected to be in school uniform. The Year 11 exams will be returned on Wednesday 4 December.
Students should report to the Lecture Theatre at 8.35 am in PE uniform. The day will conclude by 10.35am. If students need to change subjects earlier than Wednesday, please make an appointment to make the changes.
Planning for 2020 is still underway and during the following week booklist information will be sent to you. Please be aware that our database is not linked to our supplier, Lighthouse Books, if changes to courses are made then this does not prohibit you from choosing different books. For many of our courses, no books are required as teachers have developed their own materials or they are using online texts.
In the last few weeks of term our middle school students will be working on cross curriculum units of work. In year 9 we are trialling Project Based Learning (PBL) – exploring the question, “How can your 9@Scotch camp facility develop resilient, independent and connected students?”
PBL is being explored through many of our middle school classes and is part of the Educational Strategic Plan.
The students in English and PE who have participated in the 9@Scotch program are being asked to design a facility, present possible solutions and a design brief to convince the Council of Governors to fund the facility. The students will look at costs, impact, connections to the community and sustainability for the program at Year 9.
Year 7 Immersion 2020
On Wednesday we had 31 students join our current Mitcham campus students for a day on the Torrens Park Campus in readiness for next year. The students were ‘immersed’ in our programs for the day. Students got to see the farm, visit the Art expo, participate in Drama and PE and make Anzac biscuits in Food Tech. In Science they looked at skulls, made balloons pop, tea bags burn, water move and activated solar panels.
It was a very successful day with lots of smiles on faces. The next day will be orientation day on 22 November where students will have House activities planned.
