Academic Matters: Week 9

Academic Matters: Week 9

As we get closer to the end of the term, students are getting ready for their exams and end of semester assessments. So how can everyone help here? Teachers are available for extra help and support; students should create a study timetable and parents need to be there to offer their guidance and support on the home front. The year 10 and 11 examination timetables can be found in SEQTA.

Planning for 2022 will start to take place next week. After the Year 10 semester tests Heads of Faculty and myself will give presentations to students about Year 11 subjects and their flow through to Year 12 and this will take place on Thursday June 24. The future planning for Year 10s and parents evening (via zoom) takes place later that night (6.45pm) and a zoom link has been sent to parents already where information about the SACE and what pathways are available over the next few years.

Year 11s will finish their examinations on Thursday. Students who are currently studying a Year 12 subject, including the Research Project should attend their normal scheduled classes if they do not have an examination. On Friday morning representatives from Adelaide University, Flinders University and UniSA will be here to speak to the students, letting them know what types of courses are available and all about university life. I will also with the Heads of Faculty provide information to the students about their choices for 2022. It has been pleasing that many students have already started to think about next year and beyond.

A reminder that we will also hold a webinar for current Year 12 students and their parents on Wednesday June 23 at 6.45pm. Information has already been sent out about the evening

Next term SACE information talks will be provided for Year 9 parents Tuesday July 20 and for Year 11 parents Wednesday July 28. Again, we will use zoom for these meetings to enable parents to join in the conversation from their kitchens! Over the first few weeks of term 3, I will speak to all of the students from Year 7 – 9 about their choices and selections for 2022.

Staff are currently putting together semester reports for students from Year 7 – 12 and they will be available in SEQTA from Friday June 25 after 4pm.

End of the Year for Year 10

Our students will finish their examinations at the end of week 5 – November 10 and then they will have the opportunity to go to Goose Island, work on an integrated learning project (which they will start in their PLP classes), do service learning, participate in work experience if they wish, university visits including Tonsley and Lot 14, first aid training and other life skills. E.g changing a tyre and money matters. Work experience will be optional for students, as many work places find it difficult to take on students due to compliance.

Planning for this will take pace in Term 3.

Staffing News

  • Kirsty Hart and Jessica Powell will be going on maternity leave at the end of the term and we wish them all the very best.
  • Andrew Tremain will take long service leave for Term 3 only.
  • Ross Hand and Alison McCarthy are taking LSL for Term 3 and 4.
  • Dr Antony Hubmayer finishes up at the end of this term after 17 years of service and we wish him all the very best. And we welcome back Julia Vine and Kara Cleary return from maternity leave.
  • New staff joining the College will be Lucy Young (Music), Lucy Menadue (Ag and Science), Vicky Guo (Maths and Science), Teagan Schmidt (Food Tech and CCS), Kay Petherbridge (French), Michael Byrne & Paige Day (Design & Tech).
  • Melinda Christie will be the Acting Head of Languages for the remainder of the year.

As we have a change of semester then there will be changes to teachers from semester 2 for many classes as students start their new elective choices. There will be changes to mentor groups as well, as staff will be on leave and this will be communicated later.
