Challenge: Torrens Park Campus House

At Scotch we believe for a young person to truly flourish and be able to maintain a positive state of wellbeing they must face challenge.

If no challenges are faced and they are completely shielded from challenge and discomfort, then the student will not be able to develop the required skills to cope and deal with difficult life events and we would ultimately be doing them a disservice. We want Scotchies to be able to face and overcome challenges and have a high level of resilience when they leave the College and enter the world. We believe that challenge is intrinsically linked to student wellbeing and prescribe to the challenge and resource model, where a young person will face any number of challenges at a given point in time and if they are equipped with the resources to face them, they will have a positive state of wellbeing. We want to support the students and build their resource kit, almost like a backpack they carry with them with the skills to deal with challenges as they arise. It becomes an issue when there are more challenges than resources, and equally an issue when there are more resources than challenges, and this is where the College and the Wellbeing team identify and step in to provide the additional care and support required.

We want to create authentic opportunities for students to face challenge and discomfort, where they will have the opportunity to develop resilience and gain that positive sense of self when they are able to overcome these challenges.

We have embedded opportunities throughout the year levels where they are faced with challenge, even starting the year with a Challenge Day for Year 8’s where they worked as teams to overcome obstacles and challenges in an outdoor setting. We are also increasing the students’ wellbeing literacy throughout the new Wellbeing programmes offered at Years 8, 9 and 10. With a major component of the Year 8 program focusing on resilience, students will be able have a deeper understanding of what resilience is, what the key pillars are that make someone resilient and how to develop these skills and enact them through authentic experiences.

The students are also challenged to become the best person they can be, and to identify the type of person they want to become and what behaviours and actions they can do to work towards it.

We want to embrace challenge, develop resilience in our young people and support them to thrive socially and academically. We want our students to have the resources to maintain a positive state of wellbeing in the face of challenge.
