End of 2019 Update

End of 2019 Update

We have enjoyed a superb centenary year. The events organised by the Community Team, overseen by Andrew Saies (former Chair of Council and newly inducted Scotch Legend) and the Scotch 100 Committee, have given us memories forever. I trust you have enjoyed them and benefit today from a deeper connection with the College as a result.

Inevitably our big plans for the future will cause disruption to our daily life in 2020 and 2021. Not everybody will be affected and school life will for the most part be the same as always. However, it is only fair to warn the community that at some point there may be some inconveniences due to the building work that is about to start on our site. These developments have been long in the planning and will bring exciting and marvelous benefits to our College.

I pay tribute to all my colleagues for their commitment to your children through the year. School life is never uncomplicated and I am grateful for the support I see for your children and for you as we meet the challenges as well as enjoy the glories of a life at Scotch.

Thank you to you as parents for your forbearance when things have gone wrong and for your words of thanks and praise when they have gone right. This great quest of ensuring children have the best preparation for their future has been a 100 year task for Scotch and will continue with renewed vigour into our second century.

I hope you have enjoyed the many achievements throughout the year as recorded in eNews, on our website, and often on social media and in the press. We look forward to another active, formative and purposeful year in 2020. I send my greetings to you and all your children and families, and wish you a very happy Christmas season.

Dr John Newton

Mobile Phone Usage: Torrens Park Campus

Please note that we are changing the culture and expectations around the use of mobile phones on the Torrens Park Campus from Term 1 next year.  We have followed the debates about this phenomenon for some time, and the Junior School has already prepared a response to this research in the iPad program.

We have commissioned a thorough consultation process with a wide range of stakeholders in the community and we are convinced that we can preserve what is best about the use of technology while limiting  and where possible eliminating the worst effects.  We will be more specific about such matters in the new academic year.  For now, please note that we remain attentive to the educational journey of your children, to the enhancement their wellbeing and safety, and to their preparation for a very different and challenging future from the one we faced as young people.  I will very much value your support in taking forward a new approach and culture around the use of mobile phones at Scotch.

Scotch Shop Access

Please note that there will be no vehicle access to Scotch College via the Muggs Hill Road entrance during the school holidays and into Term 1, 2020 due to earthworks and construction. Access via Carruth Road or Blythewood Road is recommended during this time. Holiday trading hours for the Scotch Shop can be found online.

House Changes for 2020

Year 12 students will have the unique opportunity to trial a horizontal Mentor group structure in 2020.

This was a strong recommendation coming from the Pastoral Care Review Group’s findings, which incorporated views of students, staff and parents. This review is ongoing, with the final recommendations to be made in Term 1 of 2020.

Given the strong level of support and interest for this initiative, it was an ideal opportunity to trial and gather feedback. As a result, there will now be 3x Year 10/11 combined Mentor groups in the Senior School for each House and 1x Year 12 Mentor group for each House.

Experienced, passionate and dedicated staff applied and gained the position of Year 12 Mentor. Each and every one is motivated to develop an optimal Pastoral experience, responsive to the needs of the students in their final year.

Please join me in congratulating the Year 12 Mentors in each House:

  • Cameron: Suzanne Farrington
  • Campbell: Sam Smith
  • Douglas: Amanda Johnson
  • Gordon: Gavin Kilpatrick
  • McGregor: Mark Kelly
  • Stewart: David Albano

Some Year 11 students have been allocated a new Mentor group, to accommodate this change. They have been informed by their Head of House this week. We anticipate for Year 10 and 11, this trial will lead to a stronger association with the students in their Senior School House and Year level. Middle School House structures remain unchanged.

I welcome any questions you have about this move.

Director of Student Wellbeing

Departing Staff & Staff Changes for 2020

My best wishes are extended to all staff leaving the College. I would like to make special mention of our long serving staff members, Gill Haarsma, Marc Newton and Malcolm Massie. We thank them all for their loyal and dedicated service and wish them well for their future.

I would like to congratulate Darren Beanland on his appointment to Pulteney Grammar School. We have put in place an interim model for 2020 to ensure we have strong support for our sporting offering. Jarrad Schar will be our Head of Sports Programs in addition to his Head of Rowing responsibilities. We have appointed Brodie Gleeson as Head of Boys Sports and are currently recruiting for a Head of Girls Sport. We will provide greater detail about the interim model at the commencement of the new academic year.
