Growing With Gratitude – Creating a Wellbeing Foundation

Growing With Gratitude – Creating a Wellbeing Foundation

Teaching our students the attitudes and skills that will cultivate and develop their wellbeing is important from an early age. To this effect, it is exciting to see our Reception to Year 3 students participate in the Growing With Gratitude program throughout Terms 3 and 4.

In Week 5 – we started the program with a dynamic and engaging launch, where students were treated to a special assembly and subsequent skills session with the Adelaide Crows Community Programs group. Along with Claude the Crow – students learned how they could enact the ‘5 Habits of Happiness’ in their daily lives. It was impressive to see the 100% engagement in the content and I have heard that many students talked about the assembly for a long time after!

Namely, the 5 habits encompass the following domains:

  1. Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude
  2. Performing Acts of Kindness
  3. Engaging in Positive Reflection
  4. Look for opportunities to be a Wellbeing Warrior
  5. Participate in Operation Home Service

I know many parents are particularly excited about Habit #5 – which is exactly as it sounds! Each habit has an extensive body of research underpinning the program’s lesson content, which is perfectly tailored for students in the Junior Primary years.

In addition to the student assembly, a parent night was held to explain the theory and intentions for students in the classroom and at home. Ash Manuel, the program founder shared his vision and passion for Wellbeing, outlining the impact this program can have. It was a delight to hear thoughtful parent questions and positive reflections on the early stages of the program’s introduction.

The program is a targeted and specific Wellbeing initiative that has been embedded into our Health and Personal Development courses. The skills can be built on throughout the week, as quick, fun energising activities can be inserted as a brain break or energiser. Indeed, parents can even play at home with the Gratitude Wheel – click this link to take it for a spin!

Parents can view an overview of the 5 habits, as explained by AFL and AFLW players at this link. An overview of the program can be found at: https://www.growingwithgratitude.com.au, by contacting your classroom teacher or myself on the details below.
