Living Below the Line

Living Below the Line

Oaktree is Australia’s largest youth-run international development charity, with a vision to see a world where all people have the opportunity to thrive. They aim to create a more just future by providing leadership and educational opportunities and direct their funds to people in need. Nearly half of the worlds’ population live in poverty, on less than $2.50 a day, and more than 1.5 billion people live below the extreme poverty line, living on less than $1.25 a day.

We, the Scotch Oaktree Student Ambassadors, have been running an initiative called Live Below the Line, which aims to start a conversation about poverty and fundraise to support Oaktree’s work. Since 2010, Live Below the Line has raised more than $11.2 million. This year, we have helped set up Live Below the Line at Scotch, with a shared lunch for our participants last Wednesday. We also ran a fundraising BBQ with the junior school students. As Oaktree Ambassadors, we have attended several workshops to develop our capacity. Throughout the workshops, we have been developing our leadership skills, learning how to create effective fundraisers, writing action plans and were introduced to project management.

To date, we have raised $3,347, which puts us in 2nd place overall, which is amazing!

Oaktree directs all of their funds towards helping those in poverty. This money will go so far - to contribute to the education of so many young people who will go on to become leaders in their communities and help others develop their leadership skills.

When we donate to Oaktree ,58% of the donations go directly into Oaktree’s work, including raising awareness in Australia and campaigning for policies to become official legislature to allow charities such as Oaktree to access and send money to impoverished populations.

Thank you so much to all the Scotch families who supported Live Below the Line. Those who would still like to donate, simply search ‘Live Below the Line’ and find the Scotch page. It is easy and can benefit so many people in need.
