Oratory Update

Oratory Update

On Monday 22 February the 2021 Senior A debating team (Winter Birkett, Daniel O’Connor, Thangam Verghese and I), hosted a workshop to officially launch the Oratory season. We were delighted at the number of people who attended! We spoke about South Australian Debating Association (SADA) Debating, which is a vital part of the Oratory Program at Scotch. Over 40 people have signed up for the pre-season training.

If you missed the meeting, it’s not too late! Please contact Mrs Marie Beanland, our amazing Head of Oratory, to discover which division you can debate in or to get more information.

Whilst debating is an important part of the Oratory program, we also encourage students to participate in a wide range of other Oratory competitions, such as public speaking competitions like the South Australian Law Society Mock Trial competition which has been very popular with students from Year 9-12 participating for the past four years, with considerable success; or Rostrum Voice of Youth, which is open to students in years 7-10 and is a public speaking competition, with impromptu and prepared speech sections.

Another opportunity for Scotchies participate in is United Nations (UN) Youth events. UN Youth is a youth organisation which holds various competitions and conferences simulating different aspects of the UN. These include Evatt, where you team up with a friend and take the place of a country in the UN assembly, and UN Voice of Youth, where you present a solution to a global problem. Scotchies have previously had success in both of these competitions, with a number attending the National Final of Voice of Youth in 2019, 2020 and coming up in 2021.

Finally, we are extremely proud to be launching The Inaugural 2021 Newton Oratory Cup, an inter-house competition which will encompass all aspects of the Oratory program at Scotch, with four separate competitions which will combine to decide an overall winner of the Newton Oratory Cup. The competition will also allow students to earn points towards the Saies Shield. The four aspects of the competition will be:

  • Impromptu speeches - students will be given a topic or statement and will have around 5 minutes to prepare a 2-minute speech
  • Persuasive speeches - students will be given a topic and will have two weeks to prepare a 3-minute speech
  • Interpretive performance - students will be given a poem, or short section of text and will read it out, focusing on their own unique interpretation of the words, truly brining the text to life
  • House debating - students will be in house teams and will compete in a round robin competition, with more relaxed rules than SADA debating, in order to encourage those with little or no experience to participate.

If you are interested in any of the above opportunities, please contact either myself, or Mrs Beanland to get involved or to find out more.

We look forward to seeing as many students as possible to kickstart the 2021 Oratory Program at Scotch.
