Sport Update: Welcome to 2018

A big welcome back to Sport at Scotch - we are really excited for the start of 2018!

Training for most sports and age ranges has already started this week. We only have our Drive tennis team in action this weekend, with all other sporting competitions due to start over the next two weeks. More information will follow next week on that.

We have had a few changes and additions over the holiday break.  As some of you may or may not be aware, over the Christmas break Dillon Mullins our Head of Cricket was offered and accepted a teaching position at St Ignatius College for 2018. This position will also include the position of Teacher in Charge of Cricket. Whilst we are very sad to lose Dillon, this is a great opportunity for him and we wish him all the very best. In his place we have successfully appointed Muditha Maduwantha, or Madu for short. Madu grew up in Sri Lanka, playing 79 First Class cricket matches for the Tamil Union before moving to Australia with his family. He has been involved in the PAC Cricket program for a number of years, is currently at Manager at Megacourts Windsor Gardens as well as an assistant coach at Prospect District Cricket Club. He has a wealth of coaching and administrative experience and is eager to embrace a new opportunity with our community. We are fortunate to have some fantastic coaches who are keen to assist in this transition, so we welcome and look forward to working with Madu this term.

We are also excited to announce a new coaching staff for our Athletics program 2018. Brendan Golden is our new Head of Athletics. Brendan joins us with a wealth of Athletics experience in his coaching background. Brendan has been the President of the SA Athletics League since 2002. He has been a registered coach with the SA Athletics League since 2003 and has coached Athletes to compete in both SAAL and Athletics SA competitions. Brendan has coached many athletes who have won major races at the SAAL’s Bay Sheffield carnival, major interstate races with the Victorian Athletic League, State Titles in ASA competition (including Under 14 and Under 16 100m, 200m and 400m) and medals at Little Athletics National Championships.

We also have qualified Athletics coaches Max Spurling and Ollie Callahan. Max, as many will know is an old scholar now who has competed at the highest level in Athletics, participating in multiple national championships as a middle-distance Athlete. Max’s extensive experience with multiple AIS and SASI programs offers excellent coaching knowledge, as well as the passion for Athletics that he hopes to inspire within other Scotch athletes. Ollie also has a wealth of coaching experience acting as a current coach for multiple jumps and sprinting. Ollie has himself had great success winning multiple state titles as well as representing SA in the recent Pan Pacific Games. Furthermore, Ollie’s passion for Athletics and extensive knowledge make him a fantastic coach who will work to ensure all Scotch Athletes reach their full potential. We are delighted to have such a wealth of quality and experience in our coaching staff for 2018. Here’s looking forward to a great Athletics season.

We are extremely pleased also to have Alice Gregory returning as our Head of Softball. Alice has previously been our Head of Softball but due to work and her Sporting commitments could not commit to the full role last term. Alice is now able to do this and we are delighted to have her back in the role.

Alice is joined by two new coaches in Georgia Wilson and Gabby Snyder. Gabby joins us from Indiana USA where she played league Softball and coached. She has also previously coached and played in Basel Switzerland and is currently playing and coaching at the Walkerville Cats here in Adelaide.

Georgia as many of you will know is one of our old scholars now after finishing yr 12 last year. Georgia was one of our standout players over the years and has proven to be an excellent leader and mentor in the past to other Softballers. Georgia Wilson will coach our B and C team along with Gabby

Maddie Cameron completes our coaching staff for 2018 and she will continue as our yr 6 coach, which is fantastic news.

So, exciting times for our Sports for term 1 2018. With most matches starting next weekend, we wish all our students the best of luck in all our sports. We hope you have fun, train hard and enjoy the competition in whatever sport you are involved in.
