Thinkers in Residence

On Tuesday 11 June our Year 8 girls had the opportunity to spend time with Thinker in Residence Allyson Hewitt. Allyson is a Senior Fellow for social innovation at the highly successful MaRS Discovery District in Toronto Canada and has come over as part of the Don Dunstan – Thinkers in Residence series.

The purpose of this session for our girls was exploring how to find their voice and what are the things that are holding them back. The girls had the opportunity to listen to Allyson’s story and hear how she found her voice and purpose at a young age through service. Through a thinking workshop session two questions were posed – What are the things that are holding you back? What do you think could help to overcome this? The girls shared their ideas with each other and the group and discussions were had about not letting age be a barrier to voice and purpose.

Finally, Allyson share with the girls what some of the things were that held her back at such a young age and the strategies she used to overcome these. It was a wonderfully reaffirming session for our Year 8 girls coming off the back of our Scotch TedxYouth event which was all about the Power of Purpose. This session is one of the unique opportunities students at Scotch have available to them and we will look to build on this in the future as we continue to empower our young women to make a difference in our world.
