Welcome Back for 2018

Welcome Back for 2018

Dear Parents

Welcome back to the academic year 2018.  We begin on a real high in the Senior School after exceptional results from our Year 12s.  We had a strong idea of their performance as we always do, but they exceeded our expectations by some distance and I am delighted that so many young people received results way beyond their expectations.

There has been activity over the break. Code Camp in the Junior School brought in excellent numbers of students. The Senior School service tour to Laos was hard and fulfilling for our senior students, and we are delighted with the victory of the 1st XI cricket team in the Quadrangular 20:20 tournament held this year in Victoria.

Many thanks must go to the wonderful parents who supported our Rowing Camp in the last full week of the holiday, and to the staff and students who went to Goose to do maintenance on our property there. Please note that we are always pleased to hear your good news too whenever you send that in.

Over the holidays there have been some improvements to our infrastructure.  Parents will notice developments in both the Junior and the Senior School which will help us continue to provide a high-quality education for your children.  With a year to go to our centenary, we are planning even bigger projects both this year and the next in order to take our infrastructure to a very different and exciting level.  We look forward to informing you more about that as the year goes on.

I am delighted to welcome the following new staff to our College:

  • Adam Townsend (Audio and Theatre Technician), has many years’ experience in the technical facilities in the Performing Arts area.
  • Chad Freak (Faculty Support Officer – ODE), has a double Diploma of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism and has a particular interest in rock climbing.
  • Hugh Drum (Faculty Support Officer – Ag Science), is highly qualified and experience in Agriculture.  He was a fourth-generation primary producer and recently worked at SARDI on Agricultural Field Research.
  • Andrew Costi (Faculty Support Officer – Design and Technology), is a retired Design and Technology teacher and has previously done relief work at Scotch.
  • Edward Holland-Cronin (ICT Support Officer), is currently studying a Diploma of ICT and continues to develop his skills in the areas of network administration and system maintenance.
  • Heath Deer (Maintenance Department), is a qualified electrician and comes to us from Elwa Energy Savers.
  • Lia van de Pennen (ELC Teacher), is a qualified Early Childhood teacher and has worked at St Peters Woodlands, St Peters Girls, St Ignatius College and Unley Primary.
  • Michelle Bawden (MC Teacher), commenced her teaching career in 2017 and holds a Bachelor of Education as well as a Diploma of Applied and Visual Arts.
  • Melissa Hewison (MC Teacher), has held various teaching positions in the Catholic, Independent and State systems and comes to us from Linden Park Primary.
  • Matthew King (MC Teacher), has spent time teaching in Queensland and London and comes to us from St George College in Mile End.

  • Jessica Nicholls (TPC Teacher), comes to us from Cabra College and has done relief teaching at Mt Barker, Urrbrae and Blackwood High Schools.
  • Michael Roberts (TPC Teacher), has held the positions of Arts & English teacher and Middle School Co-ordinator at Charles Campbell College.
  • Liam Hay (TPC Teacher), has had various temporary relief teaching roles at Parkside Primary, St Peters’ Girls School. Mt Gambier High and Urrbrae High.
  • Lynn Thompson (CLIP Teacher), has taught in various locations in SA and overseas in France, London and Hong Kong. From 2007-2017 Lynn held the role of EALD co-ordinator at Buddhist Chang Wing Kan Memorial School in Hong Kong.
  • Rebecca Menzies (MS Homegroup Teacher), returns to us in 2018 after teaching at Scotch in 2016.  Rebecca enjoyed being a home class teacher at Scotch in 2016 and also had positive experiences in a similar role at John XXIII College in Perth.
  • We also welcome our two new GAP students from Robert Gordon’s College, Ben Bowring and Morvan MacFarlane.

We wish them all a very warm welcome and I am sure you will enjoy their contribution to our school life and their work on behalf of your children.

I am also pleased to highlight some significant events of Term 1.  We would encourage parents to attend the College Sporting Model Presentation on Tuesday 6 February at 6pm.  On this information night we will be presenting our sporting model and plans into the future.  The Torrens Park House Welcome Function is on Friday 9 February (further details are below) and we look forward to seeing many of our Torrens Park parents at this event.

On Mitcham Campus, Acquaintance Night will be held on Monday 5 February, and the big event for the year is our Grandparents’ Day on Thursday 5 April. Please also note the Overnight Camps/Outdoor Education program commences from 21 – 23 March and the Year 1 & 2 Swimming Carnival is on 13 March and the Year 3-6 Swimming Carnival is on the 15 March.  Learning Progress Parent/Teacher interviews are on the 9 and 10 April.

There will be two State Election events in March, to which all Scotch parents are invited. Details will follow later in term.

2018 promises to be another exciting year.  We welcome you all very much on the journey because Scotch remains a community for you, your wider families, its former students and supremely your children.

Principal

Welcome Back Morning Tea – 31 January 2018

There will be a Parents Welcome morning coffee hosted by the Parents and Friends in the Webb Science Quad from 8.30am for Torrens Park parents.   Mitcham Campus parents are also invited at 8.30am for morning tea, which will be held on the Kallawar lawns.

Torrens Park House Event

We are looking forward to seeing Torrens Park Campus parents at the “House Welcome for Parents Evening” on Friday 9 February 2018, from 6.00pm until 8.00pm at the Webb Science Undercroft.  Come along and meet your child’s Head of House and Mentor as together we celebrate the start of another fantastic year at Scotch.

ICT Responsible User Agreement

At the beginning of each year, students on the Torrens Park Campus will be guided through a series of activities that reinforce the responsibilities that we all have for making smart choices when using technology. Our student leaders have produced a brilliant set of media to highlight these guidelines and will share this with everyone at our opening assembly. New students are given a detailed outline during their ICT orientation on laptop rollout day at the beginning of the term. Mentors, teachers, Heads of House, and visiting experts, support an ongoing commitment to these smart choices with regular conversations, training sessions and reminders about expectations.

Many of the resources that support this programme are available from the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner. There are some very useful tips for parents here as well.

The Responsible User Agreement that all students (in partnership with their parents) sign at the beginning of the term, clearly summarises expectations around security, privacy, harassment, copyright, plagiarism, data backup and safety. It refers to use not only of laptops, but all devices, and not just at school but anytime, anywhere. Your support in guiding smart technology choices is much appreciated and vital.

Learning Technologies Coordinator
