Year 11 Leadership Week

The sixth week of the third term on the school calendar marks a transformational period for Year 11 Scotchies, as it is leadership week; a time in which the students learn about what it takes to become a genuine leader, and how to lead by example wherever they find themselves in life.  

On Tuesday 27 August, the year 11 students were privileged with the presence of Kevin Gallagher, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Santos Limited; one of the leading energy companies in Australasia.  Mr. Gallagher was so generous as to fly into Adelaide specifically to speak with the Scotch students amidst his tight work schedule, which is booked months in advance and takes him interstate and overseas.  In a critical time of forked roads in the lives of the year 11 students, Mr. Gallagher shared with us his journey, speaking of his secondary schooling through to tertiary studies, and the different employment opportunities he has experienced.  Through this, the messages of making the absolute most of any and every leadership opportunity came through clearly. Mr Gallagher emphasised that past choices which resulted in negative outcomes shouldn’t be viewed as regrets, but instead as learning opportunities.

Mr. Gallagher also shared with the students what marks true leadership, which leadership qualities stand out to employers, and the importance of proper leadership in the workplace.  Strong emphasis was placed on developing not just one’s IQ, but also one’s EQ, or emotional intelligence. This is increasingly becoming critical for skilled employment.  Additionally, key messages were ingrained in the students that firstly, negative thinking helps achieves nothing; secondly, leaders aren’t born or bought, but developed and transformed; and thirdly, that our leadership journey doesn’t begin once our tertiary education finishes, but that it starts now, wherever you are in life.  Mr. Gallagher was warmly thanked for sharing his vast knowledge and experience with the year 11 Scotch students, shortly before flying off interstate once again.
